Judges notes from the 2013 Region 6 Future Stars Clinic:

Observations provided by the JO Regional Technical Director, Sean Monaco:

Still Rings:

8 Year Old Division

*Bent arms are OK, but the criteria calls for a straight body.  Many gymnasts piked to the inverted hang and/or arched before with a small swing to turnover.  Both are separate deductions.

*Swings are the largest part of this routine and very few were able to get to the 45 degrees above horizontal as is called for.  Ones that separated themselves kept their shoulders from rising and maintained proper form.

*For the dismount, most gymnasts did not open up for the landing at or above horizontal, which is what is in the criteria.

9 Year Old Division

*Slight pike in hips is OK on the muscle up, but not excessive pike.  Many gymnasts had a hard time keeping the rings turned out for the full 3 seconds and need to focus keeping their arms off the straps.

*The dislocate needs to show rise, but many gymnasts kicked their legs straight back or down, and showed little to no rise.

*The swings were much improved compared to the 8 Year Old division, but still could improve.

*Not many inlocates showed rise, but were done fairly clean.

*Still not much opening on the dismount

10 Year Old Division

*Inverted Hangs were improved, but some gymnasts are still taking small to medium swings before the turnover.

*Swings have improved regarding height.  Stay focused on turnover.

*The next 3 to 4 skills is where all the gymnasts are separated

*The backuprise is the most overlooked deduction.  Many gymnasts are getting medium to large deductions from arm bend.

*The press can be deducted in many areas, with arm bend, arms on straps, body position (shoulders too far forward).  Many gymnasts were shaky in the HS which led to an inefficient bail.

*Flyaways were improved with this age group.

Parallel Bars

8 Year Old Division

*Some gymnasts were slower than others at getting their legs straight for the glide kip and transitioned to a low swing in the back for the upper arm layaway.

*The most technical gains on the swings could be made in the front by showing more extension and not leaning back.

*Not many dismounts showed a true hollow body

9 Year Old Division

*The Reverse Candle Stick position was low for some gymnasts, being below 45 degrees.

*The two skills that gymnasts could improve the most on are the front uprise and the Giant to the bars.  In particular keeping the inside grip on the Giant.

*Coaches MUST spot the Giant swing

*The Presses to HS were mostly very good.

*A surprising amount of gymnasts did not hold the HS before the swing forward to dismount.

10 Year Old Division

*In the beginning of the glide kip, many gymnasts are not getting a full extension in the basket swing forward.

*Front uprise still causing some issues and translates to the back swing

*Some coaches did not know that they could assist with a hand on the giant.  Some gymnasts omitted the giant.

*Many gymnasts did not pirouette early enough.  Very few did the skill with no or a small deduction due to body position/form or small steps.
